Every Soul is to taste Death

[kulloo nafseem zaa-e-katul maut – Every soul is to taste death 3:185]

True are the verses of the Almighty Allah that specify that every soul is to taste death. Nobody knows when his/her death shall occur. Therefore, everyone should be ready to die and, in that respect, preparations have to be made.

Preparations for Death

His Eminence discards any credit or laurels and proudly says that the outcome of his faith is in his spiritual guide, the Saint of Saints, Hazrat Sayyiduna Shaikh Abdul Qadir Jilani (may Allah be pleased with him), the Holy Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) and Almighty Allah. To quote his words of wisdom:

"O brother, bear in mind that at the time of your birth,

everybody was rejoicing while you were lamenting.

Live such a life that when you die everybody weeps

on your departure from this worldly life while you are smiling."

The Path of Bliss should be followed according to Shariat and Tariqat:

"Each passing breath is a jewel of inestimable worth.

Each passing day takes us one step closer to death".

When the breath has left the body, the body is useless; therefore the importance of our being lies in the breath and the activity of our physical being depends on breath. Hazrat Shaikh Abdul Qadir Jilani (may Allah sanctify his soul) said, "Oh people, die before you die. Die as far as your lower selves and your wills are concerned. Remember death frequently and prepare for it before it's arrival and then you will have died before you die."

Hazrat Shaikh Abdul Qadir Jilani (may Allah sanctify his soul) further stated:

O young men, occupy yourselves with that which concerns you and reforms you. Preparing for that which lies after death is of concern to you, striving against your lower self is of concern to you, paying attention your faults is of concern to you, but attending to the faults of other people does not concern you. Remember death and work in preparation for what lies after it, for the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) said: "The intelligent person on is one who calls himself to account and works in preparation for that which lies after death, while the incompetent person is one who lets his lower self follow its passion, yet still wishes for forgiveness from Allah".

And remember when thy Lord said unto the angels:

"Lo! I am creating a mortal out of potter’s clay of black mud altered.

So, when I have made him and have breathed into him of My spirit…."

[Quran 15:28-29]

Shaikh Hakim Moinuddeen Chishti Sabiriyyah explains that Almighty Allah uses the word nafas for His own breath, and He uses the word ruh for His own soul. These same words are used to mean human breath and human soul – confirming the fact that we are originally from Almighty Allah, of Allah, for Allah, and in the end will return to Almighty Allah. The view of the Sufis is that life is a continuous set of breathing exercises and the Holy Quran, in addition to all else that it may be, is a set of breathing exercises.
